Threading FAQ’s

If you haven’t undergone a threading treatment before, you may have a few apprehensions towards this technique, so we have taken to the time below to answer as many of the frequently asked questions related to the practice of threading…

What is threading?

Threading is a hair removal technique that has been practiced for centuries. Facial hair is removed swiftly yet meticulously from the most delicate areas of the face by knotting off thread and creating a trap that forces out hair by the root. It is the best alternative to waxing and tweezing, especially for sensitive skin. Unlike waxing, threading does not remove a layer of skin, which can leave the skin on your face susceptible to sun damage. By far the least invasive method of facial hair removal, threading can target individual hairs to get the precise shape and smooth finish you want.

What does threading feel like? Does it hurt?

Threading is comparable to tweezing or waxing. You may feel a pinching or light scraping sensation, but most customers agree that threading is no more uncomfortable than other hair removal methods.

How long does threading take?

A simple eyebrow threading can take just 5-10 minutes. The upper lip takes about 5 minutes; a full face thread takes about 20-30 minutes.

What areas of the body can be threaded?

  • Eyebrows
  • Sideburns
  • Lip
  • Chin
  • Fingers/hands
  • Toes/feet

What are the benefits of waxing vs. threading?

  • Threading does not peel off a layer of skin
  • Hair does not grow back as fast
  • The skin doesn’t usually get red and irritated
  • Threading can target individual hairs
  • Hair only needs to grow just above the skin to get threaded
  • Over time, hair becomes finer and more sparse
  • Threading will pick up the finest hairs from the surface of the skin

How long does threading last?

Depending on your hair type and area of the face, full re-growth can be anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks. Hair will start to grow back sparse and finer after repeated threading because hair is pulled out at the root, which weakened it. You can get re-threaded as soon hair grows just above the skin, whereas with waxing the hair needs to be at least 2/8” long before it can be removed again.

If I get my full face threaded, will the hair grow back darker?

No. Since hairs are being removed from the root they actually tend to grow back finer over time.

Is it okay to get threaded if you have sensitive skin?

Yes. However, depending on your sensitivity level, you may experience redness or minor bumps at site, but it should subside in 10-15 minutes. In rare cases, the area may remain red for an hour or two. If you tend to break out after treatment, we recommend not using the lotion or aloe gel that your esthetician usually applies. Refrain from using face products for a few hours until the area is less sensitive. If you develop a rash that does not subside, call your dermatologist.

Can I specify how I want my brows shaped?

Yes! Before you begin, let your esthetician know how you want your brows shaped and how thick or thin you’d like them.

My brows don’t have a natural arch, is it possible to get them shaped that way?

Absolutely, but be aware that to create an arched look, our estheticians will need to remove more hair which creates a thinner brow. If you want a thicker brow shaped to your natural contours, we don’t recommend the arched look.

I over tweezed. How long should I wait before my next threading appointment?

Although hair can be removed once it’s grown above the surface of the skin, we recommend waiting for about two weeks to give your eyebrows a chance to grow back in so your esthetician can give you the shape you want. You can come in anytime for a “clean up.”

What should I do to prepare for threading?

Let your hair grow just above the skin and you’re ready. If you want a new or different shape to your brows, let them grow a bit but do not tweeze them so your esthetician can see their natural shape before suggesting the best shape for your face.

Is it safe to get threaded after cosmetic surgery?

Check with your doctor about the specific healing time for your procedure and inquire how long you should wait until to resume threading.
